If you persist and move forward with a will to learn, building a shed will definitely become a memorable and rewarding experience for you.

Location Of The Shed

The placement of your shed must be determined after considering the pros and cons of the different plots available to you. The plot must be level and clean of any possible obstacles like trees or rocks. Remove all types of possible problems from the construction plot like leaves, rocks or junk. ( wood shed plans ) Building a shed close to trees can be dangerous because some branches of the tree can fall on your shed and damage it.

Check that the plot is open enough to receive natural winds and is at such an angle that it receives sunlight at least some hours every day. The land should also not have any collected water. If there is some slope to the land which is causing water to accumulate, then flatten out the ground before you start making the foundation.

From Foundation To Roofing

It may be more convenient to construct the sections for your shed walls separately on the ground and then later secure them into place to the base posts. Next it time to start making the roof structure, starting with the rafters and trusses. You can purchase pre built roof trusses and assemble them to avoid having to make the complex cuts which are needed for making the roof. Build the ridge beam first then fix the joists to it. If you build the roof yourself, pay special attention while laying the rafters and measure that they are at proper angles.

Cut out the various joints using a compound miter saw and pay special attention to match the angles with that mentioned in the plans. Lay the roof underlayment using felt and paper once the main structure is completed followed by the shingles. Cover the angle joint in the middle of the two roof section of a gable roof with insulation material to prevent water seepage during bad weather. Protect the roof from rain and snow by covering it with a layer of weather proof emulsion paint.

Once the basic structure of the shed is completed you can customize it further to suit your own needs. It is advisable to construct some shelves on the shed walls for storing items off the ground. Garden sheds will definitely have use for shelves to store small pots and tools. Shelves can easily take up a lot of space if you fit too many too close, so leave enough space to move things freely. You can also fix special fixtures to the ground for holding specific equipment like lawn movers or other gardening tools. Commonly the designs for such fixtures are already provided in your shed plans.

Many household amenities like running water, electricity and even cable TV can be easily made available in the shed with some minor modifications to the original design. Sheds can be built pretty large with several rooms if there is enough land available and you have a big budget. You could do things a bit different from the regular shed conventions and make a door which is round at the top to add a bit novelty to the shed.
